Swedish legislators are considering introducing a ban on marriage between cousins. This decision has sparked sharp reactions among parts of the Muslim community in Sweden – some people are threatening to leave the country if a new law is introduced.
Critics of the ban argue that marriages between cousins are deeply rooted in their culture and tradition. According to them, the delegation of such practice constitutes Unrighteous attack to their community and religion.
Some opponents of the new regulation were to publicly state:
"Marriage between cousins is part of our culture. Their ban is discriminatory and many families can choose to leave the country".
Controversial Tradition
Marriages between cousins are relatively common in some Muslim communities around the world, including immigrants in Europe. However, doctors and geneticists have for years been alerting that such compounds significantly increase the risk of genetic defects and hereditary diseases in children.
The Swedish authorities are considering the ban for health and social reasons, arguing that protection children is more important than maintaining certain traditions.
Divisions in society
The case quickly divided the public. Proponents of the ban stress that in a modern secular state, practices that pose a real threat to the health of future generations should not be tolerated. Opponents in turn accuse the government of discrimination and interference in private life and immigrant traditions.
Some Muslims say that if the law comes into force, they will consider moving to other European countries or returning to countries of origin.
