Manchester bus accident: roof broken on low bridge [Films]

The metal noise, passenger screams and sudden lack of roof – so ended Monday's trip with a bunk bus line 100, which hit a low bridge in Eccles (Manchester, United Kingdom).

What happened on Barton Lane

At 3:00 BST, July 21, 2025, Stagecoach Service 100's bunk bus pulled off its regular route and entered the Bridgewater Canal Aqueduct bridge at the intersection of Barton Lane and Trafford Road. The design with a clearance of 3.5 m "cut off" the upper deck like a lid from the can, throwing one passenger on the road and sowing a stampede among travelers.

Key facts

  • The vehicle was outside the programmed route
  • The roofs and wreckage scattered the way with metal and glass fragments
  • Traffic was blocked for over three hours

  • The driver (50 l) was arrested on suspicion of careless driving causing serious injuries and released on bail

Repeated accidents at this bridge

The same bridge "cut down" the bus roof in April 2023. Residents talk about at least three similar events in the last decade, which raises questions about the effectiveness of fleet navigation markings and systems.
