In the face of the forthcoming peace proposals concerning the war in Ukraine, Polish President Karol Nawrocki spoke, highlighting the key principles that should guide negotiations. His statement, published on the X platform, refers to current discussions on the international stage, including Donald Trump's revealed peace plan, which sparks controversy in Europe. Nawrocki recalls that Russia as an aggressor cannot achieve its strategic objectives at the expense of Ukraine and the security of the continent.
Context of the statement: Storm around Trump's plan
A few days ago, the media revealed a 28-point peace plan prepared by the Donald Trump administration to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The document, published, among others, by the Axios Service, assumes, among others, the recognition of Crimea and parts of Donbas as de facto Russian, demilitarization of Ukraine and security guarantees from the USA and NATO. The plan also envisages the withdrawal of NATO from direct engagement and the distribution of frozen Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine – including $100 billion from the US and the same from Europe.

President Nawrocki wrote in his post on X:
“Pojawiające się propozycje zakończenia rosyjskiej wojny przeciw Ukrainie muszą uwzględniać fakt, że Rosja jest państwem niedotrzymującym umów.
Any peace plan aimed at ending the Russian Federation's war in Ukraine must be accepted in Kiev. It is Ukraine who has been the victim of Putin's criminal aggression and it is the Ukrainians, with the support of the United States and EU countries, who must have a decisive voice in the peace talks.
Any agreement on Europe's peace and security can only be reached with all stakeholders.
The price for peace cannot in any way be the achievement of strategic goals by the aggressor, and the aggressor was and is the Russian Federation."
This declaration highlights four key elements: Russia's unreliability in keeping the agreements, the sovereignty of Ukraine's decisions, the inclusiveness of negotiations and the ban on rewarding the aggressor.
Emerging proposals to end Russian war against Ukraine must take account of the fact that Russia is a country that does not keep contracts.
Any peace plan aimed at ending the Russian Federation's war in Ukraine must be accepted in Kiev....
Why is this statement important to Poland and Europe?
Poland, as one of the main allies of Ukraine, spent billions of PLN for military and humanitarian support. Nawrocki's statement fits into the Polish state's right, warning about a room that could undermine the security of the region. Experts indicate that Trump's plan meets many demands from Russia, which could encourage further aggression – e.g. against Baltic countries or Poland itself.
What about the peace in Ukraine?
The future of negotiations depends on the attitude of Kiev and Washington. Ukraine strongly rejects the surrender of territories, and Europe demands security guarantees. Nawrocki’s statement reminds us that true peace must be just, not imposed. Will Trump's plan be modified? Let us follow developments because the stakes are not only Ukraine, but stability and security throughout Europe.
