Kraków: police fired at 23-year-old knife-wielding man on Kapelanka Street

A 23-year-old man carrying a knife walked along Kapelanka Street in Kraków during the night from Saturday to Sunday. Police officers fired warning shots and one missed shot in his direction, and the detained man was taken to hospital.

Reports after 3 a.m.

Spokeswoman for the Lesser Poland Police, Deputy Chief Inspector Katarzyna Cisło, said that after 3 a.m. the police received several reports about a man walking along Kapelanka Street with a knife. She noted that, given what had happened in the Main Square, residents are currently very alert.

A patrol identified the 23-year-old, who was holding a knife with a blade about 20 cm long.

Warning shots and a missed shot

According to the spokeswoman, officers first fired warning shots, but the man did not react. Then one of the officers fired in his direction and missed. – This sobered the man up, and he threw away the knife – Cisło said. Police detained him and took him to hospital. No one was injured.

According to the first findings of the police, the detained man may have a mental disorder. Police have not yet said what charges he may face.

No link to the Main Square

The spokeswoman stressed that the night-time intervention was not connected to the Saturday shooting in the Main Square. About that attack, after which the prime minister declared national mourning, we wrote in our article about the arrest of the shooter from a car in the Main Square.

This is not the first knife incident in Kraków in recent days – at the end of October, a 24-year-old attacked pharmacy employees with a knife on Gall Street.
