Senator Murphy calls Trump's Iran war plan 'insane' but withholds details

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, who was briefed on the Donald Trump administration’s plan to resume operations against Iran, called it „insane” and warned of a new spiral of escalation. He did not disclose details, and the White House has not officially confirmed the plan.

Murphy wrote on X on Wednesday, October 29, that according to reports, Trump plans to resume the war with Iran after the elections. He added that some senators had been briefed on the war plan.

The senator stressed that he cannot disclose details. He did, however, assess that the plan „will not achieve its goals” and will trigger a „new cycle of escalation”.

What he said after the briefing

As the American station TNND reports, one of the briefings included a „fairly detailed conversation” about what the plan would look like if military operations were resumed. According to The Daily Beast on Thursday, at the Middle East Institute, Murphy spoke of a „devastating escalation”. The Common Dreams portal also attributes to him words about the risk of „destroying the commitment to abide by the law”. The same outlet writes that officials reportedly presented a possible attack as a „short-term” plan. Murphy sits on the Senate foreign relations and budget committees.

A version describing a short, intense campaign also appears in reports cited by the Daily Beast: the US reportedly told Gulf states to prepare for such a scenario after the November 3 elections. This information comes from media reports, not from an official administration statement.

The administration’s position

The Daily Beast recalls that Trump declared he would not begin attacks on Iran before the elections. According to the same source, the Pentagon is strengthening missile defense, moving troops, and preparing additional warships and aircraft. On Truth Social in recent days, Trump has not posted about strike plans; he only shared material about American support for preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon. As of publication, the White House has not publicly responded to Murphy’s remarks.

Background: more reports on plans

The topic has been returning for several weeks. We wrote about CNN reports that the Pentagon has variants of an attack using the GBU-43/B bomb, and that US forces are ready for a large operation within 96 hours of an order, although the president has not made a decision. The war with Iran has been ongoing since early March, and Murphy has for months criticized how it is being conducted and questioned the president’s authority to start it.

What it means

For readers in Poland, the most tangible effect is on the oil market. As we wrote, Brent reached about $114.5 per barrel, with fears of new strikes and Tehran’s retaliation in the Gulf region pushing prices up. Further signals about the timing of an attack, which according to reports could come after November 3, may affect fuel prices. Murphy’s remarks are the opinion of an opposition politician, and the content of the plan is not publicly known.
