On Friday, May 8, 2026, at the request of President Donald Trump, the U.S. Department of War published hundreds of declassified documents, photographs and recordings concerning UFOs/UAPs. Among these were the shocking 1966 FBI files, describing the eyewitness accounts of "the three-and-a-half-to-four feet tall (c. 107–122 cm), dressed in space suits and helmets", coming out of metallic objects.
Documents were made available on the official government website https://www.war.gov/UFO/ under the programme PURSUE (Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters). This is the first large installment of archives under Trump's February executive regulation, ordering declassified acts related to UFOs, UAPs and supposed contacts with extraterrestrials.
The White House confirmed publication on platform X:
‘🚨 UFO FILES RELESED – https://www.war.gov/UFO/" — @WhiteHouse, May 8, 2026
What exactly was revealed?
The main "hit" is an internal FBI memo dated October 19, 1966, sent from the San Francisco office to J. Edgar Hoover himself. The document summarizes Frank Edwards' book Flying Saucers – Serious Business and then UFO reports:
- 1965 was to be "the year of the largest number of UFO sightings in the world" – seen by many reliable witnesses, including policemen, military and civil pilots and defense workers.
- Objects are described as metallic, noiseless, reaching "fantastic speeds", capable of hanging in the air and disrupting electromagnetic equipment.
- Three types of shapes: airship (up to 300 ft long), disc (from several to 100 ft in diameter) and egg-like.
- Colours: from blinding white to red and orange; some emit "blinding lights".
- After landing or clash, the ground under the objects was allegedly burned.
- The most sensational part: "A few witnesses reported sighting of the crew that landed from objects" – beings measuring 3.5–4 feet tall, in suits and helmets.
The FBI also mentions the alleged recovery of wrecks of "flying saucers" – including unknown metal alloys with thousands of microscopic balls (15 microns) and traces of micrometheorites.
Background and reactions
Documents do not contain new evidence or photographs of creatures – this is a summary of reports and certificates from the 1960s. At the time, the FBI emphasized that many accounts come from "reliable people". The background also mentions the congressman Gerald Ford (later President), who demanded congressional interrogations in the UFO case, and a government study of the University of Colorado under the direction of physicist Edward U. Condon.
War Secretary Pete Hegseth stressed in a statement: "We are committed to full transparency on classified classifications that have been fueling speculation for years."
UFO-loggers call these files "one of the most explosive" in the present installment, but skeptics remind us that these are mainly summary statements, not confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial life. The U.S. authorities point out once again: "The eyewitness testimony does not confirm the existence of extraterrestrials or advanced non-human technology."
This is only the beginning – according to the announcement there are to be another "drops" of declassified materials. For now, 161 documents are available for War.gov/UFO/, mainly scans of FBI files.
It's a development. The article is based on official documents published today by the Department of War and the Daily Mail article.

Update:
UFO files show flying objects spotted by Apollo astronauts while on the Moon's surface.
