How to read NBP courses? Practical Guide

The NBP rates are divided into two types: the average rate published in the table A and purchase and sales rates from Table C. The average rate is the reference value determined by the National Bank of Poland — it cannot be bought or sold directly, but is a commonly used benchmark, inter alia in tax conversions or invoices in foreign currency. The purchase rate is the price at which the bank or currency will buy your currency — If you come back from abroad and want to trade the euro for gold, you'll get the lower rate. The sale rate is, in turn, the price at which the financial institution will sell you the currency — it is this higher rate you will pay when you buy, for example, the euro before going abroad, and the difference between the purchase and sales rate, called spread, is the profit of a currency or bank.

Currency Trivia of the Day

Pound sterling is one of the oldest still used currencies in the world — Its history dates back over a thousand years, and the name itself derives from the silver weight unit used in medieval England. The United Kingdom is one of the few European countries that, despite close economic ties with the continent, have never joined the euro area, maintaining their own currency even after decades of European integration. Today the exchange rate of the pound to the gold is almost PLN 4.91, making it one of the most expensive currencies in the official NBP exchange rate table.
