How to read NBP courses? Practical Guide

The NBP rates are divided into two types: the average rate (Table A) and the purchase and sales rates (Table C). The average course is a kind of reference point — it is used, for example, for tax, accounting or contract conversions. The purchase rate is the price at which the bank or currency buys your currency — So that's what you get by selling your euros or dollars. The sale rate is the price at which the bank or currency sells to you — That's what you'll pay by buying it in cash or through a transfer. The difference between the purchase and sales rate is the spread — The smaller the offer, the better the offer, so before each exchange it is worth comparing the bids of several cantors or banks with the NBP table as a benchmark.

Currency Trivia of the Day

Japanese Jen (JPY) is one of the cheapest currencies per unit — We'll pay just under 2.3 cents for one yen today. This is due to the historical policy of the Bank of Japan, which has maintained extremely low interest rates for decades and the denomination of the currency has never been revalued — in contrast to many other countries that have carried out currency reforms in the past and replaced the old banknotes in a more favourable proportion. Therefore, in Japan prices are given in thousands of yen — which for the first time is a surprising experience for a European visitor to this country.
