Three intense days of the 2025 matura exams are behind us. Thousands of students across Poland have already sat the exams in Polish, mathematics and a foreign language. Were this year’s papers really difficult? We check how matriculation candidates rate the level of the questions and which tasks caused them the most trouble.
How did the first days of the 2025 matura go?
The 2025 matura opened, as tradition dictates, with the Polish language exam. Students then moved on to mathematics, and on the third day to a modern foreign language. Each of these exams is compulsory, and to pass the matura, candidates must score at least 30% of the points on each of them.
This year, students also had the option of an additional subject at advanced level, although passing it does not require reaching a point threshold.
Were the questions difficult?
Mathematics – basic level
Mathematics is often what stirs up the most emotion. According to reports from students in Kraków and the surrounding area, this year’s maths exam was moderately easy for most of them.
The biggest challenge for students was the final optimisation task, yet most matriculation candidates feel the exam was predictable and did not differ in level from previous years.
Polish and foreign language
In the case of Polish, students used open questions published by the Central Examination Board (CKE), which made preparation easier. For some matriculation candidates, the Polish exam was harder than maths, especially if they did not feel confident analysing literary texts.
The modern foreign language exam (most often English) is traditionally considered the least stressful of the compulsory exams. Many students stress that the tasks were similar to those from earlier years and did not cause them major difficulties.
What did students find hardest?
Most complaints about difficulty concerned:
- The optimisation task in mathematics
- Open tasks requiring independent reasoning
- The essay in Polish, especially for those less interested in literature
However, a large group of matriculation candidates feel that school tests were sometimes harder than the matura itself.
Were this year's matura exams hard?
To sum up the first three days of the 2025 matura, most students rated the level of the exams as moderate and predictable. Well-prepared candidates should have no problem reaching the required 30%. The most emotion was stirred by a few more complex tasks, but these did not decide the overall verdict on the exams.
