Jan Magiera scored a free kick into the top corner of the goal during a U12 match between Śląsk Wrocław and Athletik Wrocław. After scoring, Jan knelt on the pitch, showing his shirt with a sentimental message: “Dear daddy. You will always be in my heart”. Who was Jacek Magiera for his family and football?
Jacek Magiera was a Polish footballer and later coach, regarded as one of the more intelligent and intellectual figures in Polish football. He was born on 1 January 1976 in Częstochowa and played mainly as a defensive midfielder, but could also appear as a centre-back.
As a player
- He is most closely associated with Legia Warsaw, where he played for several seasons and twice won the Polish championship.
- Earlier he played, among others, for Raków Częstochowa, Widzew Łódź and Cracovia Kraków, and also in youth national teams (he was, among other things, European U16 champion in 1993).
As a coach
- After ending his playing career, he became a coach, working, among others, at Legia Warsaw and Śląsk Wrocław, as well as at Zaglebie Sosnowiec.
- In recent years he was the second coach of the Poland national team, which reflected the high respect he enjoyed in the community despite his relatively young age.
He was most often described as a player and coach who made up for any lack of brilliant “flair” with very hard work, consistency and intelligence – both in play and in the analysis of training sessions.
Why did Jacek Magiera die?
The incident took place on Friday, 10 April 2026, in the morning in Wrocław.
Jacek Magiera died as a result of sudden cardiac arrest (NZK), which occurred during his routine running training.
Despite an immediate ambulance call, ongoing resuscitation and the intervention of doctors, he could not be saved.
