Christine Lagarde will step down as president of the European Central Bank on February 7, 2027, the bank announced on Thursday, October 29. Her term was due to run until the end of October 2027.
According to the ECB statement, Lagarde informed the Governing Council and the President of the European Council, António Costa, that she will leave on February 7, 2027. The bank also published the information on its account on X.
The statement says that her successor will be appointed by the European Council under the procedure set out in Article 283 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The Governing Council thanked Lagarde and, as the ECB reports, gave her a long standing ovation. The statement is quoted, among others, by Reuters.
Departure before the end of her term
Lagarde has led the ECB since 2019. Her term was to end at the close of October 2027, so she will leave about eight months early. As Reuters writes, speculation about an early departure had circulated for months, and the World Economic Forum was named as a possible destination. Lagarde herself, according to the ECB statement, did not give a reason in her notice to the Governing Council, and the bank did not state the reasons for the decision or her future plans.
Reuters points to the political context. The timing gives EU leaders time to choose a successor well ahead of the French presidential election. According to polls cited by the agency, Marine Le Pen is the frontrunner in them. This is the agency’s assessment, not the ECB’s.
How the successor is chosen
The ECB president is appointed by the European Council, made up of the heads of state and government of the EU. The procedure under Article 283 of the treaty includes an opinion from the European Parliament and the Governing Council of the ECB; the nomination itself rests with the leaders. The president’s term lasts eight years and cannot be renewed. Lagarde was the fourth person to hold the post and the second from France.
The ECB has not named any candidates; it only said that a successor will be chosen „in due course”. The media have named possible successors, for example Pablo Hernández de Cos and Klaas Knot, but these are speculation, not decisions of the institution.
Interest rate decision the same day
The announcement of her departure came on the day of the monetary policy meeting. According to Reuters, the ECB was to announce its interest rate decision at 13:15 GMT, and Lagarde’s press conference was scheduled for 13:45 GMT. That corresponds to 14:15 and 14:45 Polish time. At the conference, the president may be asked about her decision.
What it means
Until February 7, 2027, Lagarde remains president, so nothing changes directly in interest rate decisions. For Poland the impact is indirect. ECB policy affects the cost of money in the euro area and, through that, the zloty-euro exchange rate and bond yields in the region. Who will succeed her we will learn only after the decision by EU leaders. As of publication, no nomination date or list of candidates has been given.
