India vs Pakistan: A new wave of tensions at the border

In recent days of tension between India and Pakistan have reached the highest level in years. All because of the tragic attack in Kashmir, which once again placed both countries on the brink of armed conflict. Is the world facing another crisis in the region?

India vs Pakistan – the source of the current crisis

The dispute between India and Pakistan about Kashmir has continued continuously since 1947, when both countries gained independence. This region, divided by a control line (LoC), is a place of frequent clashes and political tensions. The latest escalation began after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, where 26 tourists were killed – the most civilian casualties since the 2008 Mumbai bombings.

India immediately accused a group associated with Pakistan of bombing, pointing to technical and personal evidence. Islamabad strongly denied participation in the attack and appealed for an independent investigation.

Diplomatic and military response

Reactions of both parties

In response to India's assassination:

  • They canceled Pakistani diplomats and canceled visas for Pakistan citizens
  • They suspended the historic treaty on the division of Indus waters, which sparked protests in Islamabad
  • They closed the borders and stopped tourist traffic in Kashmir

Pakistan replied:

  • He closed his airspace for Indian airlines
  • He suspended the 1972 agreement with Simli
  • He announced a "strong response" to the eventual military operation of India

Border clashes

As of 24 April there is a regular exchange of fire on the control line. Both sides report the shooting down of drones and the use of heavy weapons, and the situation resembles "managed hostility", known from previous crises.

International reactions and risk of escalation

The UN Secretary-General and representatives of the United States and China have called for refraining from military action and for dialogue. Experts warn that even a limited exchange of fire between two nuclear powers can get out of control.

Key points at issue

Terrorist attacksAccuses Pakistan of supporting militantsDenies, calls for an international investigation

Are we in danger of an open conflict?

The current situation is extremely tense – Pakistani defence minister speaks of India's "inevitable" operation, and Islamabad strengthens forces on the border. India is building diplomatic support for a potential military response. Despite this, most analysts predict that both sides will seek to reduce escalation, as was the case in previous crises.

India and Pakistan are once again on the brink of conflict, and the world is anxiously observing developments. It's crucial that diplomacy prevails over military rhetoric. The history of the region shows that even the most tense situations can end with the return to the "cold war" – but the risk of unpredictable escalation remains real.
