US President Donald Trump has just announced a controversial decision to impose tariffs on seven European countries. He accuses them of subsidising Denmark and not paying for Greenland.
In a statement published on the Truth Social platform, he stressed that for centuries the United States has received no compensation for protecting this strategic island, and that now it is time for retaliation.
A 10% tariff is to take effect from 1 February 2026 on all goods exported to the USA from the following countries:
- Denmark
- Norway
- Sweden
- France
- Germany
- United Kingdom
- Netherlands
- Finland
From 1 June 2026, they will rise to 25% until an agreement on the purchase of Greenland is reached.
Trump argues that this is a matter of national security and global peace, and that the USA is the only country capable of effectively protecting this land.
For many years we have subsidised Denmark, all the countries of the European Union and other nations, without imposing tariffs or any other form of compensation on them. Now, after centuries, it is time for Denmark to repay us – the stake is world peace! China and Russia want Greenland, and Denmark can do nothing about it. They currently have two dog sleds as protection, one of which was added recently. Only the United States of America under the leadership of PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP can play this game, and with great success! No one would touch this holy land, especially since the stake is the national security of the United States and the whole world. Moreover, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland have travelled to Greenland for an unknown purpose. This is a very dangerous situation for the security and survival of our planet. These countries, playing this very dangerous game, have exposed themselves to a risk that is unsustainable and unacceptable. Therefore, in order to protect global peace and security, decisive action is necessary so that this potentially dangerous situation ends quickly and without any doubt. From 1 February 2026, all the above-mentioned countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland) will be subject to a 10% tariff on all goods shipped to the United States of America. On 1 June 2026, the tariff will be increased to 25%. This tariff will be due and payable until an agreement is reached on the complete and total purchase of Greenland. The United States has been trying to make this deal for more than 150 years. Many presidents have tried to do it, and for important reasons, but Denmark has always refused. Now, because of the Golden Dome and modern weapons systems, both offensive and defensive, its acquisition is particularly important. Hundreds of billions of dollars are currently being spent on programmes related to the „Dome”, including the possible protection of Canada, and this very brilliant but extremely complex system can operate with maximum efficiency and effectiveness only if the angle, measurements and boundaries of this territory are taken into account. The United States of America is ready for immediate negotiations with Denmark and/or each of these countries, which have risked so much, despite everything we have done for them, including providing maximum protection for so many decades.
