US President Donald Trump has just announced a controversial decision to impose duties on seven Europeans. He accuses them of subsidizing Denmark and of not charging for Greenland.
In his statement published on the Truth Social platform, he stressed that for centuries the United States had not received compensation for protecting this strategic island, and now it is time for retaliation.
The duties of 10% are to enter into force as early as 1 February 2026 on all goods exported to the US from the following countries:
- Denmark
- Norway
- Sweden
- France
- Germany
- United Kingdom
- Netherlands
- Finland
From 1 June 2026, they will rise to 25% until the conclusion of the Greenland Purchase Agreement.
Trump argues that this is a question of national security and global peace, and the US is the only country capable of effectively protecting this land.
For many years we have subsidized Denmark, all the countries of the European Union and other countries without imposing duties or any other form of remuneration on them. Now, after centuries, it is time for Denmark to return the favor – world peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and Denmark can't help it. They now have two dog teams as protection, one of which has been added recently. Only the United States of America under PRESIDENT DONALDA J. TRUMPA can play this game with great success! No one would touch this sacred land, especially since the national security of the United States and of the world is at stake. Moreover, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland went to Greenland for an unknown purpose. This is a very dangerous situation for the safety and survival of our planet. Those countries that play this very dangerous game have put themselves at risk, which is unsustainable and unacceptable. Therefore, in order to protect global peace and security, decisive action must be taken to ensure that this potentially dangerous situation ends quickly and without any doubt. As of 1 February 2026 all the abovementioned countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland) will be charged a 10% tariff for all goods shipped to the United States of America.
