The sudden fires on the popular Greek island of Zakynthos caused mass evacuation of residents and tourists. High temperatures, strong wind and dramatic scenes make the island a symbol of the crisis this summer.
Fire on Zakynthos
In recent days several fires have erupted on Zakynthos, driven by a long-standing heat wave and wind. The alarm was raised when the fire reached tourist areas and villages such as Agalas, Kiliomenos, and Pantokratoras. Local authorities decided to evacuate hotels and houses immediately, and the fight against the natural environment lasted hours.
Rescue and combating the element
Over 5,000 firefighters and 33 firefighting aircraft were directed to fight fire. The action lasted almost continuously – fires were put out by both local services and numerous volunteers. Thousands of people were evacuated, including many tourists from Poland, which shows the seriousness of the situation and the scale of the threat.
What did the fire look like?
- Flames cover forest areas, farms and buildings
- Several villages and hotels were evacuated
- In some places, fire approached right under popular resorts
- The action was hampered by 40-degree heat and hot wind
Effects and destruction
According to the latest satellite data, around 4,210 acres (1,700 hectares) of the area have already been burned in Zakynthos. Houses, hotels, cars and crops burned down. Some of the firefighters suffered burns.
Tourist safety
Tourist organizations and local services ensure that a lot of resorts remain safe, and the most important attractions are protected from fire. However, some tourists had to spend the night in makeshift shelters. Mayor Zakynthos admitted that the situation at one point "was out of control".
Is Zakynthos on leave?
Although the biggest fire has already been contained, the situation can change rapidly due to the weather. It is crucial for tourists and residents to follow official messages and remain ready for possible evacuations. The island of Zakynthos, despite the momentary crisis, has been fighting similar threats for years - each situation recalls the strength of nature and the need for solidarity.
