It is worth noting that actual exchange rates and banks may differ from the NBP tables, but it is the NBP courses that constitute a benchmark for the whole market.

The dollar rate is one of the key determinants of moods in the Polish currency market, so it is worth following its changes regularly.

How to read NBP courses? Practical Guide

The National Bank of Poland publishes two types of exchange rate tables that may at first glance embarrass. Table A contains average courses — is an official reference value, used, among other things, for tax and customs settlements, but it is not a rate at which you buy or sell currency in a bank or a cantore. Table C in turn contains the bid and the ask — the purchase rate is the price at which the bank acquires the currency from you and the sale rate is the price at which the bank sells the currency to you, which is the higher amount that you will pay by converting gold into euro or dollars. The difference between buying and selling is called spread — The smaller the offer, the more favourable the offer of the exchange, so before visiting the cantore or the bank it is worth comparing several offers by treating NBP courses as a benchmark.

Currency Trivia of the Day

Swiss franc is one of the few currencies in the world that has been seen for decades as a so-called safe haven — In times of global financial turbulence, investors buy CHF massively, which makes the franc often more expensive when other currencies lose value. Although Switzerland is a small country with fewer than 9 million inhabitants, it has one of the world's largest foreign exchange reserves compared to the size of its economy. For Polish franc borrowers, this feature of Swiss currency has been of special, painful importance for years — The franc was expensive exactly when the global economy was in shock.
