In the world of cryptocurrency, where fortunes may arise overnight but equally quickly disappear, Roman Novak's story reminds of the dark side of the industry. A Russian cryptocurrency millionaire and his wife Anna were brutally murdered in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and new details reveal how the torturers forced them to look at each other in agony.
Circumstances of kidnapping and murder
Roman Novak and his wife Anna disappeared in early October 2025 in Hatta, a mountainous region of Dubai, where were lured under the pretext of an investment meeting with three unknown Russian investors. The couple were picked up by a private driver, then got into another car and a trail of them was missing. Novak's family reported him missing, which triggered a police investigation.
According to Russian investigators, the couple was kidnapped by a group of seven people, including three main suspects (two from Saint Petersburg and one from Kazakhstan) and four intermediaries. Six of them have already been arrested in Russia. The torturers tortured Novak and Anna, forcing them to look at each other while inflicting suffering. Eventually, the pair were stabbed with knives when they did not give access to their cryptocurrency assets and wallet keys. Bodies were found almost a month later in the UAE desert, near the Oman border, partly buried in concrete.
Novak background in the world of cryptocurrency
Roman Novak he was not a rookie in the cryptic industry – on the contrary, his past was marked by controversy. In 2020, he was convicted in Russia for large-scale fraud, receiving six years in prison, but was released earlier. Upon his release from prison, he moved with his wife to the UAE, where he launched a cryptocurrency application called Fintopia.
Fintopia attracted investors from Russia, China and the Middle East, collecting an impressive sum of about $500 million. Novak presented himself as an expert in cryptocurrency, promising high profits. However, the company suddenly disappeared after raising funds, leaving investors with huge losses. This is a classic scam in a cryptic world, where promises of fast wealth often end in fraud.
The motive of the murder seems to be linked to these frauds—the kidnappers demanded access to Novak's assets, but they gained nothing, probably due to lack of knowledge of cryptocurrency. Investigators suspect that the real brain of the operation may have already taken over part of the fortune.
Implications for the cryptocurrency market
This tragedy sheds light on the dark side of the cryptic market, where fraud is common and the lack of regulation facilitates criminal action. Novak, as a fraud, became the target of other fraudsters, which shows how risky it is to invest in unregulated projects. Applications like Fintopia, which disappear overnight, cause losses for thousands of people and undermine confidence in the entire industry.
For investors in cryptocurrency is a warning: always check the background of project founders, avoid promises too good to be true, and use safe methods to store assets such as hardware wallets. Novak's case also highlights physical risks – code millionaires become targets of kidnapping and blackmail, especially in regions with cooler regulations like the UAE.
In the context of a global crypto market where the value of Bitcoin and other assets is growing, such events may lead to stricter regulation. The authorities in Russia and the UAE are cooperating to clarify what may affect future investments in the Middle East region, seen as hubs for crypto
