June 2025 began with a political earthquake. Karol Nawrocki unexpectedly won the presidential election, Jarosław Kaczyński proposed a technocratic government, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk wants a confidence vote for his cabinet. What do these events mean for Poland’s future?
Karol Nawrocki's Victory – A Turnaround in the Presidential Election
The results of the 2025 presidential election surprised many observers. Although the first exit polls pointed to a win for Rafał Trzaskowski, the final data from the National Electoral Commission (PKW) decided in favour of Karol Nawrocki. The new president received 50.89% of the vote, beating Trzaskowski by 1.78 percentage points, which translated into a lead of more than 369 thousand votes.
This is not only a personal success for Nawrocki, but also for Law and Justice (PiS), which backed him. The final results were announced on the morning of 2 June, confirming that Nawrocki will take up the office of president.

We want to live in a safe, economically strong country that takes care of the most vulnerable. A state that counts in international, European and transatlantic relations. A state that cherishes its centuries-old tradition and respects its history. I will give everything I have to meet your expectations. You can be sure that as head of state I will not abandon any issue important to Poland and Poles. I will represent you with dignity on the international stage, insisting on Poland being treated as a sovereign partner. once again, I thank all of you for your trust, which I will not betray. The Technocratic Government Proposal – Jarosław Kaczyński's Response
Kaczyński Looks for a New Solution
In response to the election results, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński proposed forming a technocratic government. In his view, Donald Tusk’s current government has received a “red card” from voters and a “completely different solution” is needed.
Kaczyński stressed that such a government would be non-partisan, and its head would be chosen in talks with a broad group of politicians. The idea has triggered a flood of comments: some see it as an attempt to seize the initiative, others as a marketing gesture meant to sow uncertainty within the ruling coalition.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk Responds – Motion for a Confidence Vote
Prime Minister Donald Tusk does not intend to cede ground to his opponents. In his post-election address, he announced that he will soon ask the Sejm for a confidence vote in his government. He stressed that the Coalition of October 15th must show unity and courage, and that the government does not intend to “take a single step back”.
The confidence vote will be the first test for Tusk’s government in the new political situation. If the Sejm does not give its support, the prime minister will be obliged to submit his resignation to the president.
