June 2025 began with a political earthquake. Karol Nawrocki unexpectedly won the presidential election, Jarosław Kaczyński proposed a technical government, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk wants a vote of confidence for his cabinet. What do these events mean for the future of Poland?
Karol Nawrocki's victory – turn in presidential election
The results of the 2025 presidential election surprised many observers. Although the first exit polls indicated the win of Rafał Trzaskowski, the final figures of the State Election Commission determined the victory of Karol Nawrocki. The new president obtained 50.89% of the vote, ahead of Trzaskowski by 1.78 percentage points, which translated into over 369 thousand votes.
This is not only Nawrocki's personal success, but also the Law and Justice that supported him. The final results were announced on June 2 in the morning, confirming that Nawrocki would take the office of President.
First comment by President Karol Nawrocki (PKN) on X portal:
Ladies and gentlemen, behind us is a tough and sometimes violent election campaign. Your voices made me elected President of the Republic of Poland. It's a big responsibility and a commitment. I accept this decision with humility and respect. Every day in the course of the campaign, I felt your support as I walked across and across Poland. Not only in Poland, but also abroad. I felt like you were with me, despite the many manipulations and the wave of hate that poured out on me and my family. Thank you for every single vote I've made, every good word and gesture. For all my support in this extremely difficult fight for Poland. We won together for the sake of our beloved Homeland. We want to live in a safe, economically strong country that cares about the weakest. A country that counts in international, European and transatlantic relations. A country that cares about its centuries-old tradition and respects history. I will do my best to meet your expectations. You can be sure that as the head of the state I will not forgive any of the matters important to Poland and Poles. I will represent you well on the international stage, guarding Poland's personal treatment. Once again, thank you all for the trust I will not fail. In a special way, I would like to thank my loved ones, Martha’s wife, Kasi’s daughter, and Daniel and Antkow’s sons, for their brave companionship with me on this long and hard journey. Long live Poland!
Technical government proposal – Jarosław Kaczyński's reaction
Kaczyński seeks a new solution
In response to election results, PiS President Jarosław Kaczyński proposed the creation of a technical government. In his opinion, Donald Tusk's current government received a "red card" from voters and needed "a completely different solution".
Kaczyński emphasized that such a government would be unpartisan, and his boss would be selected in talks with a wide range of politicians. This idea raised an avalanche of comments – some see an attempt to take the initiative, other marketing gesture to introduce uncertainty in the ranks of the ruling coalition.
What can a technical government look like?
- Prime Minister selected from most approved groups
- Ministers – experts, not politicians
- Temporary nature – pending new elections or a calming political situation
Prime Minister Donald Tusk responds – motion for a vote of confidence
Prime Minister Donald Tusk is not going to give the field to his opponents. In his post-election speech, he announced that he would shortly address the Sejm with a request for a vote of confidence for his government. He stressed that the Coalition must show unity and courage on October 15, and the government does not intend to "retreat one step".
The vote of confidence will be the first test for the Tusk government in a new political situation. If the Sejm does not endorse, the Prime Minister will be obliged to resign to the President.
Poland at a political crossroads – what next?
June 2025 brought political rollercoaster. Change in the position of president, proposal from technical government and announcement of a vote of confidence.
What could happen in the coming weeks?
- Political negotiations around the technical government
- Test the unity of the ruling coalition in voting on a vote of confidence
One thing is certain – June 2025 will be recorded in history as the month in which Polish politics entered a new, unpredictable phase. The final shape of the political scene depends on decisions that will be made in the coming days and weeks.
