Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced today that Adam Szłapka will be the new government spokesman. Officially, his work will begin on 1 July 2025.
The government changes its form of communication
Until now, since the government began its work on 13 December 2023, there had been no government spokesperson. Appointing one is a good sign that the government wants to focus on communication that cuts through the noise of information and reaches a larger number of citizens.
Who is the new government spokesman Adam Szłapka?
Adam Szłapka has so far served as Minister for European Union Affairs in the government of Donald Tusk. He has been in the Sejm for years and is known for strong election results and a broad electorate. In the most recent parliamentary elections, he won the third-highest result in the country, just behind Donald Tusk and Jarosław Kaczyński.
Adam Szłapka declares that he will be available to the media around the clock, and his main goal is to reach ordinary citizens, not only journalists.
A new beginning and an end to divisions?
Will the new government spokesman reduce polarisation in Poland and reach voters who did not vote for the current ruling coalition?
Unfortunately, we do not know that yet. What we do know for certain is that on the platform X (formerly Twitter), the current government spokesman has blocked quite a large number of users, which will most likely make free communication difficult for him. Staying in an information bubble, where other users are blocked for holding different views, is bad and may in the long run lead to a distorted view of the current situation, as is the case with people such as Roman Giertych or Anna Maria Żukowska. They have thousands of people on their blocked lists, so they only see comments and messages that favour them, not necessarily ones that have anything to do with the truth.

Contact with right-wing TV channels
It is also not yet known whether Adam Szłapka will break away from the ruling coalition’s agreement not to talk with the private right-wing TV channels Republika and wPolsce24. So far, the government has been heavily repressing these channels, not allowing MPs to give interviews and not letting journalists from these media outlets into press conferences.
We hope that the new government spokesman will change this approach and show everyone that freedom of speech is important above divisions and political disputes.
