Until Monday, 2 November, maximum fuel prices set in the energy minister’s notice apply at stations across Poland: petrol 95 may not cost more than PLN 6.48 per litre. The limits are lower than on Friday.
The notice of Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka, published in Monitor Polski, sets a single rate for three days: Saturday 31 October, Sunday 1 November and Monday 2 November. As reported by “Rzeczpospolita”, this is the second day in a row that maximum prices for petrol and diesel have fallen.
What the Limits Are
- petrol 95: PLN 6.48 per litre,
- petrol 98: PLN 7.32 per litre,
- diesel: PLN 8.15 per litre.
On Friday, 30 October, higher caps applied. According to Wiadomości Rolnicze, they were PLN 6.51 for Pb95, PLN 7.36 for Pb98 and PLN 8.19 for diesel. The difference is small: 3 grosz on petrol 95, and 4 grosz on petrol 98 and diesel.
These are maximum prices, not fixed prices. Stations may not sell fuel at a higher price, but they may set a lower one. The limits apply at all stations in the country. According to Polsat News, the penalty for failing to comply can reach millions of złoty.
Where the Maximum Prices Come From
The limits are part of the third stage of the Fuel Prices Lower (CPN) package, which the government launched on 2 October. The package includes a reduced VAT rate on fuel of 8%, down from 23%, lower excise duty, and a mechanism for a maximum price announced by the energy minister. According to e-kolo.pl, the programme is to run until 31 December. The government made the return to the programme conditional on President Karol Nawrocki signing the act on a windfall tax on the extraordinary profits of fuel companies.
For comparison, in previous weeks the limits were higher. We reported that for 29 October Pb95 could cost up to PLN 6.53, and diesel up to PLN 8.20. Earlier, in mid-October, petrol 95 had a limit above PLN 7.
What It Means for Drivers
People travelling to cemeteries on All Saints’ Day and the Day of the Dead will not pay more at the pump than the limits allow. For a 50-litre tank of petrol 95, the upper limit is PLN 324. Actual prices at many stations may be below the cap.
The current limits expire after Monday, 2 November. The next notice from the energy minister is due on Monday and will set prices for Tuesday, 3 November. Only then will it be clear whether the downward trend will continue.
