Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on Friday, 6 November, that, “if everything goes well”, he will be in the United States early next week. At the Pentagon, he is to discuss a permanent base for US troops in Poland.
Conditional visit, no date given
The minister was answering a question about timing at Friday’s press conference. He first spoke of travelling “in the coming days”, then clarified: – If everything goes well, the dynamics are also quite strong in the United States, then early next week I will be in the United States.
No exact date or delegation composition was given. The defence minister noted that the plan may change. He also outlined the scope of the talks: – We will be at the Pentagon, we will talk about bases, about the presence of American soldiers, about the Polish-American alliance.
Last week, Kosiniak-Kamysz said there was no problem agreeing on a date, but that out of caution he would not disclose possible dates.
What the minister wrote about the base on Wednesday
On Tuesday, 4 November, the defence minister published a post on X about a permanent presence of US troops. In it, he wrote that he has been holding talks with the Pentagon “for months” and is working with the president so that actions “reinforce each other”. He stressed that on security matters Poland must speak with one voice.
The base issue remains open
The question of establishing a permanent base for American troops in Poland has not been decided. The topic was discussed at a closed session of the National Security Council (RBN), which the president convened for 3 November — we wrote about this when the session was announced.
The visit to Washington was planned earlier: originally it was to take place at the end of September, but it was cancelled. The minister did not publicly give reasons for the postponement. As of publication, the MON had not officially announced a date for the trip or a list of meetings at the Pentagon.
Earlier, deputy defence minister Paweł Zalewski told Polish Radio that several possible bases are being considered, and that a decision on a permanent presence is to be made after the Pentagon completes its review of force deployment, whose conclusions are expected at the end of the year.
