A shocking crime at the University of Warsaw echoed widely across the country. Who was the perpetrator, who was the victim, and what were the circumstances of this tragic event?
Dramatic attack on UW campus
Wednesday evening, May 7, 2025, there was a brutal murder at the University of Warsaw. A 53-year-old doorman was attacked by an axe by a young man. Unfortunately, a woman died on the scene from multiple head injuries. A college guard was also severely injured in the attack, who tried to help her.
Who was the murderer at UW?
According to official information, the perpetrator was 22-year-old Pole Mieszko R. from Gdynia, a third-year law student at the University of Warsaw. The man was not a resident of Warsaw and did not resist the arrest. After the attack, he did not try to escape – with an axe in his hand he was calmly waiting for the police to arrive. According to witnesses and unofficial reports, the perpetrator seemed to have been separated from reality. The police drew blood from him for drug testing.
What do we know about motives?
The motives of the perpetrator remain unknown. The man has not yet been questioned, and the D.A. announces that more information will appear after the completion of the first investigative activities. According to the university authorities, the student had not previously distinguished himself in any way – he was seen as a good student and student.
Victim – doorman and mother of three children
The victim was a 53-year-old doorman working in one of the UW buildings. The woman had a husband and three children. She died while closing the door to the Maximum Auditorium, defending herself against the attacker. Her death shook the entire academic community. The Rector of the university assured that the family of the deceased would receive all possible assistance.
The role of Adam Bodnar and SOP
At the time of the attack on campus, Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar was present. Due to his presence at the university, there were also state security officers (SOP). It was one of the SOP officers who was involved in overpowering the perpetrator just after the incident. Adam Bodnar was not directly threatened – at the time of the attack he was on another part of the campus.
