Rape and sexual harassment accusations are appearing in the public sphere more and more often. At first glance this seems positive, as it shows growing social awareness of sexual violence and helps break the taboo that for years kept victims silent. It is worth noticing, however, the other, often overlooked side of this phenomenon. There are cases of accusations without factual basis that can cause the accused lifelong harm.
Media lynching instead of justice
In recent weeks Poland has been gripped by the drama of Krzysztof Gonciarz, a well-known internet creator who was wrongly accused of rape as part of the so-called Pandora Gate. Public ostracism, a wave of hate and media pressure nearly drove the influencer to suicide. Only later did it turn out that he was innocent and that the whole case was based on lies told by a group of women.
The topic of rape, however cruel that may sound, sells well, and major media outlets in Poland take advantage of it. On Sunday, the TVN morning show Dzień Dobry TVN reported an alleged rape committed by a young tennis player against another female player. The Polish Tennis Association and the police stress that guilt has not been confirmed and that a family court is examining the case, yet the media verdict has already been delivered. Even if the young man turns out to be innocent, his reputation has been irreparably damaged.
How often do false accusations happen?
False rape accusations are a real problem, although they are often downplayed in public debate. Research shows that most reports are true, but there is a significant share of cases motivated by revenge, a need for an alibi, or family conflict. In the classic studies by Eugene Kanin, the share of false reports reached as high as 40–50%, while in other analyses it ranges between 2 and 10%. Police and court reports confirm that false complaints can lead to destroyed reputations, prison sentences, and even suicide attempts by wrongly accused people. Even Ewa Pachura, head of the investigative department of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Gdańsk, told the „Gazeta Wyborcza” newspaper that there are quite a few false rape accusations. She cited the case of mass rapes in Zielona Góra, where 50-60 percent of the rapes turned out to be fictitious. That is why an honest and responsible conversation about sexual violence should include not only the protection of victims but also the necessity of thoroughly verifying every accusation.
Psychological and social consequences – not just numbers
A false rape accusation can be a deeply traumatic experience for a man (men are most often the perpetrators of rape, but they can also be victims of false accusations), destroying his sense of worth and psychological stability. Public branding, loss of employment, and breakdown of family or friendship ties are only some of the consequences, which can lead to isolation and despair. It is worth remembering that men statistically seek psychological help less often and have greater difficulty openly expressing emotions, which intensifies the risk of unprocessed trauma. It is no coincidence that men account for around 75% of all suicide victims in Poland and worldwide. A false rape accusation, touching such a sensitive and stigmatized topic, can therefore become a trigger for deep psychological crises and even lead to suicidal thoughts or attempts.
The responsibility of media and society
In the era of social media, accusations spread in a flash, far faster than any corrections or court verdicts. Sometimes a single tweet or post is enough to ruin someone’s life and pin a label on them. Fair process increasingly gives way to public judgment and media lynching. This is no longer solely a challenge for the justice system but a problem for society as a whole. Traditional media have a duty to report on crimes accurately and responsibly. Before they stigmatize anyone or any social group, they should make sure that a crime has actually occurred.

- Introduce consequences for knowingly making false statements.
Never dismiss an accusation. Accuracy and sensitivity are key
We must not forget that rape remains a huge social problem. In 2024, 1,047 cases of rape and coercion into sexual activity were recorded in Poland. Every rape accusation is a serious matter that cannot be trivialized or discredited. It requires a careful, thorough and fair examination, with full respect for the person reporting, who often faces great fear and shame. Accuracy and sensitivity are equally essential toward the accused, because the consequences of false accusations can be tragic. Only a balanced, honest approach allows us to speak of true justice and the protection of human dignity.
Rape accusations are not just headline material; they are real human dramas. Today anyone can become a victim of media lynching. Let us build awareness before another innocent person pays a high price, and at the same time remember that every case requires prudence, accuracy and respect for the truth.
