Rape charge. A scandal that destroys life

The accusations of rape and sexual harassment appear increasingly in public space. It seems to be positive because it shows growing public awareness of sexual violence and helps break the taboo that has kept the victims silent for years. But it is also worth noticing the second, often overlooked side of this phenomenon. There are cases of incriminate accusations in facts that can harm the accused for life.

Media lynching instead of justice

In recent weeks Poland has lived a drama Krzysztof Gonciarz, a well-known Internet creator who was wrongly accused of rape as part of the so-called Pandora Gate. Public ostracism, a wave of hate and media pressure nearly led the influencer to suicide. It was only after time that he was found innocent, and the whole case was based on lies by a group of women.

The subject of rape, although it sounds cruel, sells well and uses large media in Poland. On Sunday Good Day TVN reported the alleged rape committed by a young tennis player on another player. The Polish Tennis Union and the Police emphasize that the wine has not been confirmed, and the case is being investigated by the family court, however the media judgment has already been passed. Even if the boy proved innocent, his reputation was irreparably destroyed.

How often do false accusations occur?

False rape charges are a real problem, though often underestimated in public debate. Studies show that most of the reports are true, but there is a significant percentage of cases motivated by revenge, the need for alibis or family conflict. In Eugene Kanin's classical studies, the rate of false reports was up to 40–50%, although in other studies it ranges between 2 and 10%. Police and judicial reports confirm that false notices can lead to the destruction of reputation, prison sentences, and even suicide attempts of the wrongly accused. Even Ewa Pachura, head of the investigation and investigation department of KWP in Gdańsk, In her "Gazeta Wyborcza" she admitted that there are many false rape charges. It cited the history of mass rapes from Zielona Góra, where 50-60 percent of rapes turned out to be fictional. Therefore, a fair and honest discussion of sexual violence should take into account not only the protection of victims, but also the need to carefully verify every accusation.

Psychological and social impacts – not only numbers

False rape charges may be for a man (men are most often perpetrators of rape, but also victims of false accusations) a deeply traumatic experience that destroys his sense of value and mental stability. Public stigma, job loss, break-up of family or friendly relationships are only part of the effects that can lead to isolation and despair. It is worth remembering that men are statistically less likely to seek psychological help and have greater difficulties with open expression of emotion, which increases the risk of unworked trauma. It is not by accident that men account for about 75% of all suicide victims in Poland and in the world. False rape charges that affect such a sensitive and stigmatized subject can therefore become a trigger for deep mental crises and even lead to suicidal thoughts or attempts.

Responsibility of the media and society

In the era of social media, accusations spread rapidly, much faster than any correction or judgment. Sometimes it takes one tweet or fast to ruin someone's life and put a label on it. A fair trial is increasingly giving way to public judgment and media lynching. This is no longer just a challenge for the judiciary, but a problem for society as a whole. Traditional media are required to report on crimes fairly and responsibly. Before they brand anyone or any social group, they should make sure that the crime actually happened.

What can we do?

  • Educate the consequences of false accusations and liability for the word.
  • Require reliability from media and network users.
  • Provide psychological support for victims of slander.
  • To bring consequences for knowingly giving false testimony.

Never underestimate the prosecution. Integrity and delicacy are crucial

We must not forget that rape is still a huge social problem. In 2024, 1 047 crimes of sexual assault and extortion were found in Poland. Any rape charge is a serious matter that cannot be underestimated or discredited. It requires careful, thorough, and just examination, with full respect for the reporting person, who often faces great fear and shame. The reliability and gentleness are also necessary for the accused, because the consequences of false accusations may be tragic. Only a balanced, fair approach allows us to talk about true justice and the protection of human dignity.

Rape charges aren't just headlines, they're real dramas. Today, anyone can become a victim of media lynching. Let us build awareness before another innocent person pays a high price, and at the same time remember that every case requires consideration, integrity, and respect for the truth.
