May 3 is not just a day off – it is a unique opportunity to celebrate together the values that build our identity. See how Poles today commemorate the Constitution of May 3 and why its legacy is still alive.
The Meaning of the 3rd May – a Constitution that changed Poland
The Constitution of 3 May passed in 1791, was the first in Europe and the second in the world by a fundamental law. Its aim was to modernise the state, restrict the power of magnatery, and strengthen the position of bourgeoisy and protect peasants. Although only 14 months were in force, it became a symbol of the struggle for freedom and sovereignty.
After the partitions of Poland the holiday was forbidden, but the memory of it survived in families and local communities. It officially returned to the calendar in 1919, and after a break in the times of the Polish People's Republic – again in 1990.
