Three Polish MPs flew business class to Taiwan. The ticket costs are staggering and the destination raises doubts. Service to the state or a luxury trip for public money? Correction: Deputy Minister Michał Jaros assured that the Taiwanese party paid for the delegation.
Delegation to Taiwan – who flew and why?
Marek Chmielewski, Łukasz Horbatowski and Iwona Krawczyk are names that have warmed the public in recent days. Members went to Taiwan as part of a parliamentary delegation led by the Deputy Minister of Development and Technology, Michał Jaros. According to information from Taiwanese and Polish sources, the purpose of the visit was to strengthen economic and technological relations. In total, 70 Polish delegates participated in the trip, but not everyone praised the course of their trip.
How much does a business class ticket cost on the Warsaw – Taiwan route?
Air tickets in economic class on this route are expenses of 2,500-4 000 PLN on both sides. But business class is a whole different world.
For three people the cost of business travel class can exceed 50,000 PLN! This is the equivalent of the annual salary of many Poles.
Comfort vs Saving
Business class means luxury seats, exquisite meals and quick briefings. But do Members really need to benefit from such facilities on a business trip?
- In many countries, officials travel exclusively in economic class.
- There are no clear rules in Poland – the decision depends on internal regulations of the Sejm and individual justifications.
Iwona Krawczyk's relations on social media show how easily the boundary between public service and holiday can be blurred.
Social consequences and reactions
In a time of economic crisis and rising costs of living, such spending is outraged. For many Poles, business travel is an unattainable luxury, so it is no wonder that such trips are discussed.
A luxury for public money?
The delegation to Taiwan aimed to strengthen economic relations, but the cost of business travel class puts the reasonableness of such spending in question. Should politicians imitate savings or enjoy full privileges? I leave the answer to my readers.
