Violent attack in subway car
Surveillance footage shows Decarlos Brown Jr., a 34-year-old male, attacked a young Ukrainian on the Lynx Blue Line subway in Charlotte, shortly after the victim entered the carriage. Iryna, fleeing the war in Ukraine, came to the United States with the hope of a new life.
Brown, dressed in a red sweatshirt, pulled a knife after a few minutes of travel and stabbed Zarutska three times in the throat area. The attack was sudden and completely unprovoked – the woman was reviewing the phone at the time, showing no signs of any concern towards the attacker.
Passenger response – controversy and questions
The footage clearly shows that some of the passengers have strayed from the unsub. It was only after a while that others realized what had happened, and according to sources, they tried to help Irina, but the wounds were too severe to save her life. After the attack Brown got off the subway at another stop, and the police stopped him shortly after.
Nobody reacted fast enough.
