Brown, ubrany w czerwoną bluzę, wyciągnął nóż po kilku minutach podróży i trzykrotnie ugodził Zarutską w okolice gardła. Attack był nagły i całkowicie niesprowokowany – kobieta przeglądała w tym czasie telefon, nie wykazując żadnych oznak niepokoju wobec napastnika.

Inni dopiero po chwili zorientowali się, co się wydarzyło, i według źródeł próbowali pomóc Irynie, jednak rany były zbyt poważne, by uratować jej życie. Po ataku Brown wysiadł z metra na kolejnym przystanku, a Police zatrzymała go niedługo później.
