On Sunday, July 26, a dangerous technical failure occurred at Reda Aquapark. A technician mixed up chemicals, releasing chlorine, and over 400 people had to leave the facility. Unfortunately, some of the fish in the aquarium, including sharks, did not survive.
What exactly happened at Reda Aquapark?
The fire service received a report shortly before 7 p.m. In the technical room, a technician unknowingly added sulfuric acid to a tank of sodium hypochlorite. This substance is used to treat pool water. The chemical reaction caused chlorine to be released.
Over a dozen fire crews arrived at the scene, including a specialized chemical rescue team. More than 400 guests and staff were evacuated. The technician suffered inhalation poisoning and was taken to hospital. Later, several firefighters also experienced mild symptoms.
How did the malfunction affect the animals?
The management of Reda Aquapark issued a statement on July 27. It acknowledged that the incident affected the aquatic animals in the aquarium. Some fish, including sharks, which were one of the main attractions, did not survive. Despite immediate efforts by the team and specialists, they could not be saved.
The other animals at the facility, including reptiles, are healthy. The malfunction had no effect on the water in the pools available to guests. The water park reopened the following day.
The exact causes are still being determined. The aquapark is cooperating with all services and is conducting an audit of its technical systems and animal safety procedures. Additional safeguards have been announced to reduce the risk of a similar incident in the future.
The management stressed that it is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness and deeply regrets the loss of the animals.
