The other side of winter reality – Kraków turns sidewalks into barriers for seniors

Krakow under the snow again shows how the winter reality can complicate the daily life of elderly and disabled people. At the Main Station, the city services pushed snow from the passage to the railing, making access to key pedestrian routes difficult.

The heavy snowfall paralyzed Kraków, causing serious difficulties at the Main Station. The limited passages were particularly affected by seniors and people with disabilities – snow from the pavement fell under the railings, forcing them to venture through the routes.

Kraków under snow – the scale of the problem

Last weekend, the city sank in the snow. Urban communication operated in emergency mode, and city services performed the "Winter" action – unfortunately, not everywhere effectively.

  • The main routes are kept priority, but the side crossings under the station do not always meet the basic accessibility requirements.
  • Snow moved under the railing limits pedestrian traffic – especially those who need stable support or wide passage.
  • Residents are reported to the dispatcher, but the response of the services often takes place after the precipitation has stopped.

Why is this a problem for the most needy?

The biggest barriers meet:

  • Seniors with reduced mobility.
  • Persons in wheelchairs or with the help of walkers.
  • Blind and visually impaired people, who rely on clear, unglazed routes.

How can you react?

As a disabled person, it is easy to imagine an obstacle: snow under the rail is like an open gate to everyday things.

  • If you notice a problem, report it to the city dispatcher or via applications to monitor the condition of pavements.
  • Each reaction is a step towards a better – analogous to wiping the trail for others.

The city declares the fight against communication barriers, but the truth is less optimistic. Regular checking of public places of use, rapid response to reports and education of urban services are key actions that will bring real changes.
