History and Idea of Papal Day
Papal Day is celebrated annually on the Sunday preceding the anniversary of Karol Wojtyła’s election as pope. This nationwide and international celebration combines spiritual, educational, artistic and charitable dimensions. Poles gather at liturgies, prayer services and events dedicated to the values passed on by the Polish Pope.
This Year's Celebrations and Motto: Prophet of Hope
The motto of the 25th Papal Day – “St. John Paul II. Prophet of Hope” – refers to the Jubilee Year and recalls that hope was the foundation of the Pope’s teaching. During ceremonies across the country, Masses, concerts, festivals and meetings take place. A special event will be the Gala Concert “John Paul II – Prophet of Hope” broadcast from the Basilica of St. Florian in Kraków.
Why "Prophet of Hope"?
John Paul II repeatedly emphasised that hope is not “the mother of fools”, but a force that allows us to overcome difficulties. His call “Open wide the doors to Christ” remains relevant regardless of the times. This message builds a civilisation of love and encourages action for the benefit of others.
Collection for Scholarships for Young People
A key part of Papal Day is the public and church collection in support of the scholarship programme of the “Work of the New Millennium” Foundation. Scholarships go to over 2,000 gifted, low-income pupils and students from small towns.
Accompanying Events Across Poland
This year the celebrations of Papal Day are accompanied by concerts, meetings with scholarship holders, family festivals, runs and processions. In parishes a Sunday of testimonies takes place, and on radio and television commemorative programmes can be heard. Outstanding figures of public life are also honoured during the TOTUS TUUS gala.
