Today we celebrate the 20th Papal Day. Saint John Paul II. Prophet of Hope

The 20th Papal Day is a special time of reflection on the heritage of St John Paul II and an opportunity to help talented young people from small towns. This year's slogan "The Prophet of Hope" inspires to open the door to Christ and strengthen faith in the better tomorrow.

History and the idea of Papal Day

The Papal Day is celebrated annually on Sunday preceding the anniversary of the election of Karol Wojtyla as Pope. This nationwide and international holiday combines the spiritual, educational, artistic and charitable dimension. Poles gather on liturgies, services and events dedicated to values passed on by Pope Pole.

This year's celebration and password: Prophet of Hope

The motto of the 20th Papal Day – "St. John Paul II. Prophet of Hope" – refers to the Jubilee Year and reminds that it was hope that was the foundation of the Pope's teaching. Holy Masses, concerts, festivals and meetings are held throughout the country. An exceptional event will be the Gala Concerto "Jan Paul II – a prophet of hope" given from St. Florian's Basilica in Krakow.

Why the Prophet of Hope?

John Paul II repeatedly emphasized that hope is not the "mother of fools" but a force that allows us to overcome difficulties. His call "Open the door to Christ" remains valid regardless of time. This message builds a civilization of love and encourages action on behalf of others.

Collection for Youth Scholarships

A key part of Papal Day is a public and ecclesiastical assembly for the scholarship program of the Foundation "The Work of the New Millennium". Scholarships go to over 2,000 talented, unaffluent students and students from small towns.

Accompanying events across Poland

This year, the celebrations of Papal Day are accompanied by concerts, meetings with scholarship holders, family festivals, runs and processions. The parishes hold Sunday of testimonies, and on radio and television you can hear occasional programs. Outstanding representatives of social life during the TOTUS TUUS gala are also awarded.

List of highlights:

  • Gala concert "Jan Paul II – Prophet of Hope" (TVP1, 17:30)
  • Gala TOTUS TUUS (Royal Castle in Warsaw, 11.10)
  • Meetings with scholarship holders of the Foundation in parishes
  • Runs and family festivals throughout Poland

The Value of Papal Day Today

The 20th Papal Day is not only a memory of papal teaching. It is also active help for young people and promoting values that build a strong society. Collection for the scholarship fund is a practical implementation of the ideal of "civilization of love" and an example of solidarity against adversity.

Similarly to the team play, every gesture of support strengthens the chances of success of young, talented Poles.

The celebrations of the 20th Papal Day remind us of the importance of the hope which John Paul II preached with his whole life. Sharing celebration, support for young people and reflection on values is the best way to draw on the legacy of Pope Pole – not only since the festival, but every day.
