Warsaw Metropolitan will lead the funeral of a priest from Lasopol

The funeral of the brutally murdered Anatol Czaplicki will take place on August 2 in Warsaw. The ceremony will be hosted by Archbishop Adrian Galbas.

A Tragic Crime in Lasopol

On the night from 24 to 25 July, Poland held its breath. A shocking crime occurred in a small town called Lasopole. A 60-year-old parish priest from Przypek was arrested on suspicion of the murder of 68-year-old Anatol Czaplicki – a homeless man who hoped for the help of a clergyman. The issue raises huge emotions and discussions about the crisis of the Church's credibility.

The Background of Tragedy

According to forensics,

  • The victim and the suspect priest had known each other for years and had a life contract.
  • There was an argument about the apartment Anatol demanded.
  • The priest first struck his friend with an axe and then poured flammable substance on him and set him on fire.
  • The motive was probably the disappointment of unfulfilled promises.

Funeral with the gesture of the Church

The funeral will take place on 2 August, at 11 a.m., in the Church of Divine Mercy and St. Faustina in Warsaw Wola. The Holy Mass will be presided over by Archbishop Adrian Galbas, Metropolitan of Warsaw – this decision has a symbolic dimension and is an expression of respect for the family of the victim and for everyone affected by the event.

After Mass, the urn with drugs will be deposited at Wolski Cemetery in Warsaw.

Organisation and details of the ceremony

  • The funeral is being prepared by the Archdiocese of Warsaw.
  • There is no broadcast of the ceremony.
  • The sector will be designated for journalists and camera operators.
  • The whole course of Mass and burial is to be held in an atmosphere of respect and mourning.

Reactions and consequences

Archbishop Galbas, from the very beginning of the case, publicly expressed his deep depression and called for expiation prayer in all parishes. A priest suspected of murder pleaded guilty and waiting for trial – he is facing life imprisonment.

Social impact

This case became a symbol of the drama of homeless people and the challenges facing the Polish Church. For many, Archbishop Galbas's gesture is the first signal of the institution's reflection and the attempt to restore social trust.
