On Saturday on Piłsudski Avenue in Łódź, a simple phone conversation ended in drama. The intoxicated man considered the passerby a Ukrainian and attacked him with his fists. The injured man went to the hospital with a broken nose and jaw. Police are looking for the attacker and calling for witnesses.
What exactly happened on Piłsudski?
Do zdarzenia doszło 11 lipca około godziny 14 przy ul. Piłsudskiego 67, niedaleko Szpitala im. Janusza Korczaka. Mężczyzna wychodził z klatki schodowej swojego bloku i rozmawiał przez telefon. Nagle podszedł do niego obcy, który pił alkohol w okolicy.
Napastnik krzyknął coś w stylu „wynoś się stąd, Ukraińcu!” i uderzył go dwukrotnie z dużą siłą w twarz. Poszkodowany próbował wyjaśnić, że tu mieszka, ale to nie pomogło. Atak był szybki i brutalny.
Brat ofiary, pan Marek, skontaktował się z mediami i opisał sytuację jako szczególnie bolesną. „Mój brat został zaatakowany tylko dlatego, że ktoś błędnie uznał go za obywatela Ukrainy” – podkreślił.
Effects of the attack on the victim
The victim, Mr Peter, suffered serious injuries:
- Nasal fracture
- Broken jaw
- Facial injury requiring surgery (e.g. implantation of a titanium plate)
The man was already discharged from the hospital, but he's going to have a few treatments. His face is swollen, and doctors are fighting for proper nasal reconstruction. Mentally, the whole situation also hit him hard – as the family emphasizes.
Police action – who are they looking for?
Police officers from the 6th Police Station in Łódź accepted the notice on 12 July. Preliminarily, they qualify the case as causing an average injury (up to 5 years imprisonment). They analyze surveillance and interview witnesses.

Anyone who has seen the incident or knows the attacker is requested to contact the 6th Precinct at number 47 841 13 00.
Officers stress that the exact motive will be established after the perpetrator has been detained.
