On Saturday on Piłsudskiego Avenue in Łódź, an ordinary phone call turned into a drama. An intoxicated man mistook a passerby for a Ukrainian and attacked him with his fists. The victim was taken to hospital with a broken nose and jaw. Police are seeking the attacker and appealing for witnesses.
What exactly happened on Piłsudskiego Avenue?
The incident took place on July 11 at around 2 p.m. at 67 Piłsudskiego Street, near the Janusz Korczak Hospital. The man was leaving the stairwell of his apartment block and talking on the phone. Suddenly, a stranger who had been drinking alcohol nearby approached him.
The attacker shouted something along the lines of “get out of here, Ukrainian!” and struck him twice in the face with great force. The victim tried to explain that he lived there, but it did not help. The attack was quick and brutal.
The victim’s brother, Mr. Marek, contacted the media and described the situation as especially painful. “My brother was attacked only because someone wrongly assumed he was a citizen of Ukraine,” he stressed.
The consequences of the attack for the victim
The victim, Mr. Piotr, suffered serious injuries:
- Broken nose
- Broken jaw
- Damage to the facial bones requiring surgery (including the insertion of a titanium plate)
The man has already been discharged from hospital, but several procedures await him. His face is swollen, and doctors are working to properly reconstruct his nose. The whole situation has also deeply affected him psychologically, his family stresses.
Police action – who are they looking for?
Officers from the 6th Police Station (VI Komisariat) in Łódź received the report on July 12. Preliminarily, they are classifying the case as causing a moderate impairment of health (punishable by up to 5 years in prison). They are analyzing surveillance footage and questioning witnesses.
Police appeal:
Anyone who witnessed the incident or knows the attacker is asked to contact the 6th Police Station at 47 841 13 00.
Officers stress that they will establish the exact motive after the attacker is detained.
