The DA won't kill the dogs after the Green Mountain tragedy. Shepherds under behavioral observation

Dogs who fatally bit a man in Zielona Góra will not be killed – the prosecution has set another path. Instead of a death sentence, dogs were taken care of by specialists.

Prosecutor's Office: No dogs killed

Belgian Shepherds who attacked a 46-year-old man near Green Mountain will not be euthanized. The Public Prosecutor's Office decided to observe them three months in a special temporary home for animals with aggression. Dogs will be under the guidance of experienced behaviorists who will assess their mental state and actual level of threat.

The DA is not going to kill the dogs that fatally attacked a man in Green Mountain. Three months of observation was ordered for them in a special temporary house "for aggressive dogs", where they will be under constant behaviorist control. It is possible that this stay will be financed by public money unless the court decides otherwise and the owner pays the costs. Although Belgian Shepherds have already had previously reported attacks, the D.A. stresses that it is man who is responsible for animal rearing and control rather than the four-legged themselves. – BOOP.PL on X portal

Permanent care and research

Animal control concerns not only their behaviour, but also the conditions under which they have been maintained. The evaluation will cover both current veterinary tests and a detailed analysis of their previous incidents.

Who's gonna pay for watching dogs?

Dog stay in a temporary home can be financed by public fundsUnless the court decides otherwise and charges the owner with the account for special care. This is an important precedent – similar cases in the past usually ended with euthanasia or immediate transfer to the shelter.

Possible financing scenarios:

  • costs will be borne by the owner (if the court so decides)
  • charge will fall on the public budget (if the owner is not obliged to pay)
  • possible partial coverage by NGOs if involved

Dogs have been aggressive before.

Animals, as the investigation has shown, have in the past reported cases of aggressive behaviour. The shelter workers claim that the sheepmen had already attacked people before, and the owner was informed of this on numerous occasions. Dogs could also escape from the range.

Ignored warning signals

  • the owner paid fines for lack of proper supervision
  • Despite previous incidents, dogs returned to his care
  • no additional safeguards or appropriate training were used

The responsibility lies with man

The Public Prosecutor's Office emphasizes that the key issue is the upbringing and control of animals, not their potential wine. Dogs aren't born killers.the guardian is responsible for their behaviour and security. Like with a car or a gun, it is the driver or owner who is responsible for the consequences of using his tool.

Quote of the Prosecutor

"We cannot punish animals for human mistakes. Law and common sense require that responsibility be borne by the one who led the tragedy through improper upbringing and supervision."

What about the dogs attacking?

After three months of observation, experts will decide on the further fate of the sheepdogs. Possible scenarios are dedication to a specialised centre, transfer to a new care centre with the utmost precautions or, if there are no other solutions, a judicial decision on euthanasia. The case from Zielona Góra will probably be an important precedent for similar cases across the country.
