Space 482, a Soviet probe launched in 1972, after more than half a century returned to the Earth's atmosphere. Her fate was followed by space agencies and enthusiasts around the world. What made this cosmic "veteran" so emotional?
Space probe history 482
Space 482 is part of the Soviet Vener program, whose goal was to explore Venus. The probe was launched in March 1972 and was originally to become a Venera 9 – a lander exploring the second planet from the Sun. Unfortunately, through the failure of the space launcher, Space 482 did not leave the Earth's orbit and orbited our planet for 53 years.
Structure resistant to extreme conditions
The probe was built to withstand extreme conditions prevailing on Venus – high temperatures, pressure and dense atmosphere with carbon dioxide. As a result, it was predicted that it would also survive entering the Earth’s atmosphere, and fragments could reach the surface of the Earth.
Deorbitation Space 482 – how did it look?
After years of monitoring, on 10 May 2025 the Polish Space Agency (POLSA) confirmed that Space 482 entered the Earth's atmosphere at 8:04 CEST (with an accuracy of 20 minutes). The last flight of the probe over the European sensors took place at this hour. The object then disappeared from the radar, which meant that it began deorbiting.
Where did the probe go?
According to official data, Space 482 fell into the Indian Ocean, approximately 560 km west of the Andaman Islands, west of Jakarta. Earlier there were concerns that fragments of the probe could fall on Poland, but ultimately no such event was reported.
The last flight of the Cosmos 482 probe over the European sensor occurred at 08:04 CEST, which is taken as the center of the deorbitation window, with uncertainty +/-20min.
Around 09:50 CEST, another flight of the Cosmos 482 probe over European sensors was expected.
Currently, the facility has not been recorded by available data sources in Europe, which means it entered the Earth's atmosphere.
At the moment, there are no signals that the object can enter the atmosphere of Earth over Poland.

Why was Space 482 emotional?
- It is one of the longest orbiting "space trash" of the Cold War.
- The probe was designed to survive extreme conditions, which raised questions about the safety of her return to Earth.
- Her fate was followed by space agencies, media, and astronomy enthusiasts around the world.
Trivia about Space 482
- The mass of the probe was approximately 495 kg.
- For over 50 years, she witnessed the development of space technologies.
- Her story shows how unpredictable the fate of objects left in orbit can be.
Space 482 is not only a relic of Soviet exploration of space, but also a symbol of the challenges associated with "space garbage". Her return after 53 years recalled the importance of monitoring and responsible management of objects in orbit. Although the probe did not reach Venus, its history will forever remain part of the history of space conquest.
