Tomasz Fogiel, actor, soloist and teacher at the Danuta Baduszkowa Musical Theatre in Gdynia, has died. He was 73; the theatre announced his death on Thursday, 15 October.
The announcement was made on the theatre’s social media. The team wrote: “We bid farewell to a wonderful actor, a longtime colleague and an important part of our theatre family”. The theatre also expressed its condolences to his family and loved ones. According to Radio Gdańsk, Fogiel was one of the most experienced members of the artistic ensemble.
Cause of death
No cause of death has been given. As of publication, there is also no information about the date and place of the farewell or whether the family has issued a statement.
Who was Tomasz Fogiel
He graduated from the Acting Faculty of the Leon Schiller National Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź in 1975, as reported by Teatr dla Wszystkich. He began his career at the New Theatre in Łódź, later performing on the stage of the Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdynia. From 1985 he was associated with the Musical Theatre in Gdynia – for more than four decades.
As RMF FM writes, he initially planned a brief stint on that stage, but stayed much longer. He developed not only his acting skills but also his dancing and singing. He also worked on training young artists.
Most important roles
Audiences remember him above all from “Fiddler on the Roof” directed by Jerzy Gruza, where he played Motel Kamzoil and the innkeeper Mordka. According to RMF FM, he performed in this production around 500 times. In “Jesus Christ Superstar” he played Herod and Peter.
Many people know him from the titles “Lalka” and “Chłopi”. However, these were theatre productions, not films: in “Lalka” he played Doctor Szuman, and in “Chłopi” the Blind Man. He performed in these productions in Gdynia, not in screen adaptations.
Tributes
The theatre’s artistic ensemble published a separate tribute. Colleagues called the actor “Pan Tomek” and, as Dzień Dobry TVN reports, highlighted his theatre knowledge, willingness to share his experience and stories from his many years on stage. RMF FM describes him as an informal chronicler and a good spirit of the Gdynia theatre.
