Picasso wanted – precious canvas lost on the way

This year there was a unique exhibition "Still Life, Eternal Immobility" at the CajaGranada Cultural Center in Spanish Grenada. One of the exhibits was a small painting by Pablo Picasso of 1919, "Still Life with a Guitar", whose disappearance sparked quite a stir in the world of art. This work, highly valued and insured, did not reach the site of the exhibition, which became the subject of a police investigation.

"Still Life with Guitar"she was picked up from a private collector and departed Madrid on 2 October with 56 other works for an exhibition in Grenada. However, when unpacking the boxes to be shown at the exhibition, it turned out that the image was missing. Despite the constant monitoring of transport and unloading video, no one noticed the moment of disappearance.

Possible causes of disappearance

  • The lack of proper numbering and marking of packages made it difficult for accurate control.
  • The image was small in size 12.7 x 9.8 cm, which increases the risk of missing or stealing it.
  • The investigation remains ongoing, and the Spanish police are checking records and other leads.

Meaning and value of the work

The painting is extremely valuable not only because of the author, i.e.Picassobut also because of its unique form and history. The value of the work is estimated at around EUR 600 000, which highlights the scale of the loss to the collector and the exhibition institution.

Despite the disappearance of the most important work, the exhibition in CajaGranada began as planned. The audience could admire works by such artists as Juan Gris, Maria Blanchard or Rene Magritte, which also constitute a valuable heritage of 20th century art.
