On the night of July 29, 30, 2025, one of Russia's strongest earthquakes, recorded in history with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale, appeared on the eastern coast of the Kamczak Peninsula in the Far East.
The epicentre was located near the town of Pietropawlovsk Kamczaki. After the main, very strong shock followed a series of secondary shocks, with the strongest reaching the magnitude of 7.0. This phenomenon has caused a major tsunami threat in the Pacific Ocean.
Effects
After the earthquake, waves arosetsunamiwith a height of up to4 meters, which hit the coast of Kamczaki Peninsula and surrounding islands such as Paramushir or Shumsz. In Siewiero-Kurilsk, the waves caused damage to residential buildings and infrastructure, the break-up of ships mooring in port and power outages. On Shumsh Island, the wave completely destroyed the camp.
The number of wounded in Russia was small, at least 4 people were reported slightly injured, mainly as a result of panic evacuation and escape from buildings. No fatalities directly on Kamchatka were reported.
However, tragic death was recorded in the areaJapanA 58-year-old woman died during an evacuation before the expected tsunami when her car fell off a cliff in Mie Prefecture.
In response to the earthquake and the tsunami threat, rescue and government services throughout the Pacific coast issued alarms and began evacuations of residents. The warnings included parts of Russia, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, the United States (including Hawaii, Alaska, California), Canada, as well as countries of South America and Pacific islands such as Samoa, Tonga or Guam.
The earthquake of July 30, 2025 was classified as one of the strongest seismic measurements in history. Emergency actions and early victim warning and damage systems have kept them to a minimum.
