The British Parliament adopted a landmark tobacco and e-cigarette bill on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 (Tobacco and Vapes Bill). Most important record: persons born after 1 January 2009 will be included a lifetime ban the purchase of cigarettes and tobacco products.
This means that today's 17-year-olds and all younger ones will never be able to legally acquire a pack of cigarettes – even if they reach adulthood. The aim of the bill, as highlighted by the British Ministry of Health, is to create the first ever "generation free of smoke".
The Act also includes tightening the rules on e-cigarettes. Their use will be prohibited, inter alia:
- in cars carrying children,
- on playgrounds,
- before schools,
- in hospitals.
After obtaining the royal approval of Buckingham Palace, the government will gain additional powers to regulate the flavors, packaging and advertising of nicotine products.
Undersecretary of State for Health Gillian Merron called the bill "breakthrough" and "the greatest public health intervention in a generation". She added that she "will save the lives of many people."
Opponents of the project, including Lord Naseby of the Conservative Party, point out that the bill raises discontent among retailers and the tobacco industry.
Britain is becoming one of the first countries in the world to introduce such a radical, generational ban on tobacco sales. The bill is to enter into force after final approval by Buckingham Palace.
