15 August 2025The eyes of the political world turned to Anchorage, where Presidents Trump and Putin sat for talks at Elmendorf-Richardson military base. They were accompanied by their closest advisors and translators. Their priority was the issue of ending the war in Ukraine, as well as the future shape of security in the region.
A joint statement – what are the demands of peace for Ukraine?
After several hours of negotiations, a long - awaited joint statement came to light. European leaders welcomed the US President's initiative, stressing that:
- The purpose of the talks is to stop killing in Ukraine and end Russian aggression.
- The security and territorial integrity of Ukraine must be inviolable – only Kiev decides its own borders.
- Ukraine should be given strong security guaranteesfrom the US and allies.
- Russia will not have the right to block Ukraine's intentions to join the EU and NATO.
- The sanctions on Russia will continue until a "fair and lasting peace" is reached.
After the publication of the statement, the most important European leaders – including the Prime Minister of Poland, Germany, France and Great Britain – confirmed their support for Ukraine. They highlighted the key role of the "coalition of willing" to support Kiev politically, financially and militarily.
In practice, this means:
- Intelligence and military cooperation to protect Ukraine.
- Maintain or tighten sanctions on Russia.
- Diplomatic activities supported by the US, EU and NATO.
Is peace coming? Key themes for the future
Despite the constructive tone of the talks, not all issues have been resolved. Trump stressed that many negotiations and compromises are still ahead of the world, and without the agreement of each party there will be no comprehensive agreement. European leaders agree: "Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine". The question remains how Russia will react to the next stages of the process and what tactics Kiev will choose.
