Yesterday, a conviction was handed down in one of the most shocking cases of recent years. Łukasz Żak, who was driving drunk 226 km/h on the capital Łazienkowska Trail, heard 20 years of imprisonment. This tragedy took the life of a 37-year-old family father.
What happened on September 15, 2024?
On that night, Żak led Volkswagen at an enormous speed – more than two and a half times bigger than allowed 80 km/h. He recorded his ride on the phone like it was just fun. At one point, he hit Ford, a family of four driving home.
Siła zderzenia była ogromna. 37-letni ojciec zginął na miejscu. Jego żona oraz dzieci w wieku 4 i 8 lat trafiły do szpitala z poważnymi obrażeniami. The frog fled the scene of the accident without any help.
Driver history full of red flags
It wasn't the first time a Żak got behind the wheel after alcohol. A man has been convicted of DUI multiple times. He also had an active judicial ban on driving. Yet he got back in the car – this time with dramatic consequences.
Judgment of the court – what has been ruled?
District Court for Warsaw-Śródmieście sentenced Łukasz Żak to 20 years imprisonment – The highest possible dimension for this crime. The sentence is pending.
Dodatkowo prokuratura wnosiła o dożywotni zakaz prowadzenia pojazdów i wysokie zadośćuczynienia dla rodziny ofiary.
Why did this matter affect all Poland?
The tragedy on the Łazienkowska Route has become a symbol of the problem we have been facing for years: the repeaters of drunk drivers. People ask out loud – how many more people have to die before the system effectively eliminates such perpetrators from the roads?
Rodzina ofiary straciła męża i ojca. Dzieci będą dorastać bez taty. To nie są suche statystyki – to realne, złamane życia.
