Disaster of migrant boats near Lampedusa. 20 people are dead, searching continues

    Lampedusa again became an arena of dramatic events – several dozen people fought for their lives in the rough Mediterranean. At least 20 migrants have drowned and many are still considered missing.

    Disaster in the Mediterranean – latest facts

    The accident happened on Wednesday, August 13, 2025When two overcrowded boats fell near Lampedusa. According to Italian rescuers and Ansa's agency:

    • At least 20 people drowned
    • 61 migrants were saved

    This tragedy is considered to be one of the most dramatic in recent months on this section of the migration route.

    Tragic migration through the Mediterranean

    The central part of the Mediterranean is the world's most dangerous migration route. According to the UN agency in 2024 Italy reached over 43,000 migrants, although this is much less than in previous years. However:

    • By 2025 such cases were already over 1,000

    Why Lampedus?

    The island lies on the border of Europe and Africa, symbolising both hope and dramatic attempts to enter the European Union. Unfortunately, as the latest disaster shows, this road continues to entail a great risk of loss of life.
