Imagine a shop employee who, instead of simply serving customers, devises a clever but illegal way to make quick money. That is exactly what a 34-year-old did at one of the Żabka stores on Aleje Jerozolimskie in Warsaw. He took the job so he could order luxury items using fictitious data, and then cleverly take them over. Police have put an end to this scheme – the man has been charged.
How did the fraud scheme work?
The man started work in February 2026. He used his position to place orders with online stores using the data of fictitious people. He ordered expensive items – electronics, jewellery, watches and branded clothing.
When the parcels arrived at the shop, he handed them over to a “courier” – in reality his accomplice. The accomplice removed the goods from the boxes and returned the empty packaging as “uncollected”. Crucially, such returns only occurred during the 34-year-old’s shifts, when he did not scan the shipments. The scheme ran from February to May and caused losses to the courier company exceeding PLN 100,000.
Arrest and evidence
Officers from the Economic Crime Combating Department of the Warsaw Metropolitan Police Headquarters gathered substantial evidence. During a search of the detained man’s flat, they found some of the stolen property, devices used to make fraudulent orders, and unsettled parcels he had not yet been able to pass on to his accomplice.
The 34-year-old has been charged with misappropriation of property committed jointly with another person, under recidivism conditions. This means stricter criminal liability. Officers are still looking for his accomplice posing as a courier.
