Pope Francis, known for his modesty, dedication to social matters and deep spirituality, left a will, which is an expression of his life and ministry. On the day when the Catholic Church says goodbye to this special Pope, it is worth looking at the meaning of his last will and legacy.
Pope Francis: Living in the Service of the Church
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, known to the world as Pope Francis, was born in Buenos Aires on 17 December 1936. His election for the Capital of Peter in 2013 was a breakthrough for the Church, bringing a new style of leadership that combined tradition with renewal. Francis was famous for taking up social topics, caring for the poor and marginalized, and striving for interreligious dialogue.
Testament as the Expression of the Spiritual Deep
The Testament of Pope Francis is a testimony of his deep faith and devotion to the Virgin Mary. In it he wishes that his temporal remains should rest in the Basilica of the Papal Mother of the Greater in Rome. The choice of this place is not accidental because it reflects his personal attachment to Our Lady and the meaning he attributed to prayer and contemplation.
Symbol of the Burial Site
The Pontifical Basilica of Our Lady the Greater is one of the most important Marian shrines in Rome. It was here that Pope Francis often went to prayer. The decision to bury in this place shows how important Mary was to him as a spiritual guide and guardian. A simple grave with the inscription "Franciscus" is consistent with his modest lifestyle and ministry.
The Heritage of Pope Francis
Miserando atque Eligendo
In the name of the Holy Trinity. Amen.
Feeling that the dusk of my earthly life is coming, with a living hope for eternal life, I wish to express my will in the will only in relation to the place of my burial.
My life and priestly and bishopric ministry have always been entrusted to the Mother of our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Therefore, I ask my temporal remains to rest – awaiting the day of resurrection – in the Basilica of the Papal Mother of the Greater.
I want my last earthly journey to end in this centuries-old Marian sanctuary, to which I went to prayer at the beginning and at the end of every Apostolic Journey, to entrust with confidence my intentions to the Immaculate Mother and to thank her loving and motherly care.
I ask that my grave be prepared in a niche in a side nave, between the Pauline Chapel (Salus Populi Romani Chapel), and the Sforza Chapel in the mentioned Papal Basilica, according to the attached document.
My grave should be in the ground, simple, without special decoration, with the only inscription: Franciscus.
The costs of preparing my burial will be paid from the benefactor, whom I have allocated for this purpose and which should be transferred to the Basilica of the Papal Mother of the Greater. I gave His Excellency Roland Makrickas, Commissioner of the Extraordinary Liberian Chapter, appropriate instructions on this matter.
May the Lord give a well-deserved reward to those who loved me and will continue to pray for me. The suffering that took place in the last stage of my life, I offered to the Lord for world peace and brotherhood among nations.
Francis
