Pope Francis’s testament is a testimony to his deep faith and devotion to the Virgin Mary. In it, he expresses the wish that his mortal remains rest in the Papal Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome. The choice of this place is not accidental, as it reflects his personal attachment to the Mother of God and the importance he placed on prayer and contemplation.

Feeling that the twilight of my earthly life is approaching, with living hope for Eternal Life, I wish to express my will in my testament solely with regard to the place of my burial.
I have always entrusted my life and my priestly and episcopal ministry to the Mother of our Lord, the Most Holy Virgin Mary. Therefore, I ask that my mortal remains rest, awaiting the day of resurrection, in the Papal Basilica of St Mary Major.
I wish that my last earthly journey end in this centuries-old Marian sanctuary, which I visited to pray at the beginning and end of every Apostolic Journey, so that I may confidently entrust my intentions to the Immaculate Mother and give thanks for her tender and maternal care.
I ask that my tomb be prepared in a niche in the side aisle, between the Pauline Chapel (Chapel of Salus Populi Romani) and the Sforza Chapel in the aforementioned Papal Basilica, in accordance with the attached document.
My grave should be in the ground, simple, without special decoration, with the single inscription: Franciscus.
The costs of preparing my burial will be covered from a sum from a benefactor, which I have set aside for this purpose and which is to be transferred to the Papal Basilica of St Mary Major. I have given the appropriate instructions in this matter to His Excellency Archbishop Rolandas Makrickas, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Chapter of Saint Mary Major.
May the Lord reward with the recompense they deserve those who have loved me and will continue to pray for me. The suffering that became part of the last stage of my life, I offered to the Lord for peace in the world and brotherhood among nations.
