Drama in Rynica – what happened?

At the turn of 2019 and 2020, just after the birth of the child, Margaret I. and her mother Renata I. made a decision that shocked public opinion. Just a few hours after birth, instead of looking for help, women buried a newborn on their property. The child's body was only revealed after a few years – the investigation began with momentum in April 2025.

Allegations and details of the investigation

  • The defendants were charged with the heaviest possible charges—murder with particular cruelty.
  • The prosecution emphasizes that Margaret I. confessed and made extensive explanations. Her mother, Renata I., does not confess to the alleged act.
  • Women have never been punished before.
  • It was established that the act was played without the child's father present.

Expert opinion – mental disability

Investigators point out that forensic and psychiatric experts found significant mental disability in Margaret I., which at the time of her action limited her ability to recognize the meaning of her actions. However, according to experts, a woman may answer to court and possibly be punished in the treatment ward.

In the course of the investigation, a judicial-psychiatric opinion was obtained concerning Margaret I, in which two expert psychiatrists identified her with such mental disability, which caused her to have a limited degree of considerable capacity to recognize the meaning of the act and guide her conduct," said District Attorney's spokesman in Szczecin, Julia Szozda.

The story of Rynica's boy touched Poland and reminded how important it is to support families and react quickly to the signals of the crisis. The process in Szczecin is expected to shed more light on the motives of the accused and the place of the care system in preventing such tragedies.
