Mrs Mirella of Świętochlovic, a 43-year-old woman who for 27 years practically did not leave her apartment, has become a symbol of extreme isolation and dispute over social welfare boundaries. Eventually, the court applied for forced entry into the home of social services.
What is it about Mirelli?
Mirella's been living in a family apartment for years, under full parental control. The media describes her home as a "home detention" – without contact, without work, without real social life.
She disappeared from sight in 1998 when she had 15 years; her parents told her neighbors that she was "missing," and the world did not then start looking for her.
She spent almost three decades in one small room, without contact with the outside world, without parties, schools or normal social life. The truth came out only in 2025When the neighbor heard screams from the apartment and called the police.
A woman was found in a very bad state of health – barely walking, without ID, with deep psychological trauma after decades of closure.
Since then, Mirella has been in social care, but at the same time a family is involved: the prosecution is investigating the case of psychological and physical abuse, and the authorities are considering forced placement of her in the house of social assistance.
Forced placement in DPS – what does that mean?
Forced placement of social assistance in a home is a unique tool, used only if a person refuses to agree and at the same time his or her health or life are considered to be threatened.
According to the Social Welfare Act, without consent, an application is needed to the welfare court, sometimes with the support of the prosecution.
In the case of Mirelli, the application was addressed to the District Court in Chorzów, and its purpose, as the official says, is to "protect the good of the person requiring support".
Before signing such a decision, the court must examine the experts' opinions, the family situation and the facts collected by the prosecutor.
