On Wednesday evening, there was an unusual situation at Channel Zero studio. Krzysztof Stanowski's interview with Maciej Maciak, a presidential candidate, was interrupted after just a minute. The reason was Matiak's controversial statement about Vladimir Putin, which sparked an avalanche of comments on social media.
What happened at Channel Zero?
Krzysztof Stanowski, a well-known journalist and owner of Channel Zero, has been interviewing presidential candidates for several weeks. This time he invited Maciej Maciak to the studio, who had already excited him with his attitude during the debate in "Super Express". It was at that time that Maciak acknowledged that he "smired Vladimir Putin" for his resistance to political pressure.
The conversation at Channel Zero didn't last long. When Stanowski asked Maciak to explain this declaration and the candidate did not withdraw from his words, the journalist decided to end the program and left the studio. Maciak, unaware of the off microphone, continued his speech for a few minutes.
Why was the interview interrupted?
Stanowski's decision was a reaction to Maciak's lack of distance to the Russian leader. In the Polish public debate, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine, such a position raises great controversy. Stanowski felt that there was no point in further conversation and expressed his surprise at the behaviour of the interviewer, who had already followed him after one of the debates and waited by his car in the centre of Warsaw.
Example of unusual behaviour
- Maciak was supposed to wait for Stanowski at his car after the debate, which the journalist described as "lightly strange".
- Earlier, the candidate had not answered the question "who are you?", which further raised Stanowski's suspicion.
Who's Maciej Maciak?
Maciej Maciak is one of the most mysterious candidates in this year's presidential election. His pro-Russian statements and contacts with those associated with Russian propaganda are causing concern to some of the public. Maciak himself claims to be "the most X-rayed person in this campaign" and accuses media of focusing exclusively on him, while other candidates remain out of interest.
Reactions and consequences
The aborted interview quickly became a viral on social media. The audiences split into two camps: some criticize Matiak for pro-Russian views, others accuse Stanowski of being open to difficult conversations. The whole situation shows how strong politics can polarise society and how important the role of the media in shaping public debate is.
Stanowski and Maciak's interview shows how thin the line between journalistic inquisitiveness and the need to react to controversial views is. The issue will certainly continue to be commented on in the media for a long time and may affect the further conduct of the electoral campaign. It is worth to follow the developments – Polish politics will surprise us.
