What happened? Latest information about the eruption of the Reykjavanes volcano
What a sight! 🌋🔥 The lava illuminates the sky in breathtaking drone shots during a new eruption on the Reykjavanes peninsula in Iceland on Wednesday, causing evacuation of surrounding areas.
Wednesday morning, July 16, 2025, on the Reykjavanes Peninsula in Iceland, the twelfth eruption of the volcano in the region began since 2021. Magma pierced the earth's crust, opening a gap between 700 and 1000 metres long. Both the inhabitants of Grindavík and tourists relaxing in the famous Blue Lagoon spa had to be evacuated for safety.
Importantly, the eruption has been identified by scientists as relatively small – it does not directly threaten infrastructure or the population, and the main flow of lava heads south-east, away from larger human clusters.
What do the rescues look like?
- Emergency procedures were implemented quickly.
- The residents of Grindavíku and the Blue Lagoon Spa and nearby campsites were evacuated.
- Local authorities have called for the residents of neighbouring settlements to remain in their homes and to close their windows due to volcanic gases.
- Despite dramatic events, Keflavík airport operates smoothly and the infrastructure of the country has not been affected.
Why did the volcano explode again?
After centuries of calm, the region of Reykjavanes became more active – since 2021 twelve eruptions have already occurred here. Their cause is the movement of magma in the earth's crust, whose path changes under the influence of numerous seismic shocks. Iceland quickly recalls why it is called "the land of fire and ice".
NEWS A volcano erupted on Wednesday on the Reykjavines Peninsula in Iceland, reported weather services. It was the ninth eruption in the region since the end of 2023.
Live broadcasts showed lava gushing from the crack in the ground.
Will the eruptions in Iceland be repeated?
All indications suggest that volcanic activity in the Reykjavane region is not weakening. Scientists and local services remain on continuous alert – their task is to minimize the threat to people.
