Former Justice Minister and Attorney General Zbigniew Ziobro left Hungary and currently resides in the United States – informed Television Republic on Sunday morning on 10 May 2026. A politician, prosecuted by the Polish prosecution in connection with the Justice Fund scandal, entered the US on the basis of an American visa.
According to unofficial media information (e.g. "Election", Onet, inPolitics) Ziobro and his wife Patrycja Kotecka left Budapest on Saturday 9 May. He entered America legally on a visa – he did not receive political asylum.
Rumours of Trump and the scenes of departure
The loudest news in the media is that the decision to grant a visa was to take President Donald Trump personally. According to "Gazeta Wyborcza", the Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the US Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose opposed the entry of Ziobra, but eventually the President himself agreed.
Another version (Onet) says that Ziobro received a visa as a "republic Television journalist" – the station was to play a key role throughout the operation. TV Republika announced for the evening of May 10 a broad interview with the politician – it is intended to be his first public appearance after a change of location.
Background
Ziobro has been in Hungary for several months, where he used political asylum during Viktor Orbán's time. After the April change of power in Hungary (the victory of the opposition) his position became uncertain. In Poland, he is being prosecuted by a BOLO and has numerous allegations in the scandal of the Justice Fund (e.g. abuse of power, excess of powers). His former deputy Marcin Romanowski remained in Hungary – he did not receive a visa to the US.
The Polish prosecution announces that it will verify any information about aid in the escape of Ziobra and possibly request extradition.
