59-year-old Geoffrey Wall of Barrie, Ontario, flew Air Canada passenger jets as captain for nearly 17 years without the required Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). The man was arrested by Peel Regional Police after a months-long investigation.
According to police, Wall began working for Air Canada in 1998. In 2009 he was promoted to captain, which required a full ATPL. It turned out, however, that the man had been flying with only a valid Commercial Pilot Licence, and the required ATPL document was forged.
For more than 16 years, Wall piloted hundreds of domestic and international flights, carrying thousands of passengers. The case came to light only in 2025, during a routine inspection by Transport Canada.
What did police find?
The investigation, codenamed „Project Icarus”, lasted several months. Officers established that Wall had for years misled both the airline and aviation oversight authorities. The man was arrested on June 1, 2026. He faces charges including fraud and document forgery.
In an official statement, Air Canada said it dismissed the pilot immediately after the irregularities were detected and carried out an audit of all crews. The airline stresses that „passenger safety was never compromised”, as all pilots undergo regular training and simulator sessions every six months.
What’s next?
Geoffrey Wall is due to appear in court on June 29 in Brampton. He faces a possible prison sentence. It is not yet known whether any incidents related to the lack of proper qualifications occurred during his „career”.
The case has caused enormous concern in Canada’s aviation community and among passengers. Many people are asking directly: how was it possible for someone to fly as captain of Boeings and Airbuses for almost two decades without a full licence?
