Increasingly fewer Poles bring cars from abroad, and the market for new cars begins to bounce after years of stagnation. Is this a sign that we can finally afford to buy a car straight from the living room, or is it a temporary change in trend?
We bring less cars from abroad? Let's check the data.
Despite popular belief, imports of used cars to Poland are still holding tight. According to the latest data from the Samar Institute, in 2025 Poles will bring about one million second-hand cars, which means a 4-per-per-cent increase compared to the previous year. Most cars come to us from Germany, France and the Benelux countries.
Why are we still choosing imported cars?
- More attractive prices compared to new cars
- Wide range of brands and models, often better equipped
- Rapid availability of vehicles
However, the average age of imported cars is 12 years, and only 10% of imported cars are less than 4 years old.
Market of new cars in Poland – slow reflection
Parallel to imports, the sale of new cars in Poland begins to grow. In the first quarter of 2025 142 105 new cars were registered, which means an increase of 2.5% year-on-year. The market leaders remain Toyota, Skoda and Volkswagen, although their sales do not always grow dynamically – for example, Toyota recorded a decrease of 14.3% and Skoda by 7.6%.
What increases the sales of new cars?
- Economic stability and growing financial opportunities of Poles
- Better financing and leasing offers
- Increased environmental awareness and popularity of hybrids and electric cars
Can Poles afford a new car from the living room?
Although more and more people are considering buying a new car, prices still remain a barrier. New regulations on safety and exhaust emissions raise production costs, which translates into higher prices in salons. For many families it is still more profitable to buy a few-year import car.
Comparison: Imported used vs. new from the living room
| Characteristics | Used by import | New from the living room |
|---|---|---|
| Average price | Lower | Higher |
| Vehicle age | 8-15 years | new |
| Guarantee | None or limited | Full |
| Financing | Less available | Leasing, loan |
| Equipment | Often rich | Version dependent |
Market trends and the future
Although the number of imported cars does not decrease, Poles are increasingly considering buying a new car. This is supported by economic stabilisation and an increasing offer of funding. However, high prices and inflation make the secondary market attractive to most buyers for a long time.
In the coming years we can expect a further increase in the sales of new cars, but imports used will be well – especially among those seeking a compromise between price and quality.
